Team Member Spotlight: Insights from a Legal Counsel

This spotlight story explores Ramela’s journey to PSI, how her role impacts clinical trials, and insights into what influences a successful career.

Describe your role at PSI and how you impact a clinical trial.

In my role as legal counsel, my primary focus lies in supporting PSI’s global business legal needs in areas such as contract, compliance, corporate, employment and litigation. My responsibilities can directly impact clinical trials by ensuring that agreements with our clients are successfully executed and indirectly through the support I provide to internal stakeholders in the business to complete their tasks on time, which contributes to the overall success of the trials.

How did you become interested in clinical research, and how have you grown professionally at PSI?

My journey into clinical research began during a period of career reflection where I was looking for opportunities for growth working as a solicitor within a private law firm. The opportunity to contribute to impactful research drew me towards clinical research, and joining a CRO marked my initiation into this field. While joining PSI without prior clinical trial experience initially seemed daunting, the supportive environment fostered by line managers at PSI facilitated a seamless transition. Their guidance has been invaluable in helping me align my legal background to the world of clinical research, enabling both personal and professional growth at PSI.

What do you find most rewarding about your career at PSI and what advice would you give to someone looking to join our team?

The most rewarding aspect of my career at PSI is the opportunity to utilize my legal expertise to ensure the successful and ethical conduct of clinical trials. Reviewing contracts for these trials allows me to contribute directly to advancing healthcare and making a positive impact in patients’ lives.

As someone who joined PSI without prior clinical research experience, my advice would be to embrace the learning process, work hard, seek guidance, and focus on making a positive impact. With dedication and a proactive mindset, you can not only overcome the initial challenges but also flourish in your career within the dynamic field of clinical research.
